The Dodecanese Islands lie off the eastern edge of the Aegean Sea adjacent to the coast of Turkey. A major
yachting center, the isle of Kos is one of the largest in the group. Sailing in Kos waters is absolutely splendid,
entailing open-water passages long or short between the 14 large islands and more than 40 islets, or longer
forays into Turkey or west to the Cyclades Islands to further explore this fascinating cruising ground known
for its superlative beaches and excellent snorkeling and scuba diving.

General information about the Our Charter Base: Kos.
Kos is one of the most idyllic and pristine Greek islands. Lying off the coast of Turkey, Kos is the perfect base
to begin a sailing or power yacht charter holiday. This island is part of the Dodekanes island group and offers
both spectacular and ancient Greek and Turkish ruins.  The northwesterly Meltemi winds are prominent around
Kos in the summer – they begin blowing in June and start subsiding by September.  
Kos is the capital and main port of the island with around 17,000 residents. The remainder of the town is new,
having been rebuilt according to a new town plan following the catastrophic earthquake of 1933.
There is a lot of greenery, an excellent market and all public services are centrally located.
The port is particularly picturesque while nearby the town and its hinterland are several charming beaches.

Thinks to see:
Kos was the birthplace of Hippocrates (460 - 377 B.C.), the father of medicine, and he lived and taught throughout
his life on the island. There is a tree just outside the main square where Hippocrates taught his pupils. After his
death, a medical school dedicated to Asclepius, god of healing, was built. There Greek doctors learned their trade
for well over 1000 years. About 2.4 miles from Kos is the Asklepieion, the first medical institute that Hippocrates
founded. In the area surrounding the port there are well-preserved, grandiose building from the period of Italian
rule as well as monuments from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Taking a tour of the harbor’s castle, built between 1391 and 1395 by the Knights of St. John, is fascinating.
views from the ramparts are superb. The Archaeological Museum of Kos has a wonderful collection of artifacts from
local digs.
